“Inward Landscapes”
Mapping the Silent Territories of the Mind
A Solo Online Art Exhibition by Subrata Chatterjee.
From 1st February 2026 to 3rd March 2026.
Curated by Sumita Chakravarty
Inward Landscapes is a journey inward—where thought softens ,memory drifts,
and silence begins to speak. Through evocative forms and symbolic spaces,
the human body becomes a landscape of perception and inner transformation.
This is not an exhibition to rush through. It is an invitation to pause…
to reflect…and to listen inward.
Inward Landscapes ....Where the unseen quietly unfolds.

Subrata Chatterjee is an India-based en-plein air painter, illustrator, and writer on
fine art and aesthetics, currently working from Kolkata. He holds a Bachelor of
Fine Arts degree along with academic training in psychology, which strongly influences his artistic practice. With participation in over 100 national and
international exhibitions and several solo shows, his work has been showcased at renowned galleries and cultural institutions across India and abroad.
Deeply inspired by nature, rural landscapes, and the human subconscious, Subrata Chatterjee’s
paintings explore the relationship between light, colour, space, and emotional perception. Frequent travels to remote villages allow him to observe and
translate the spontaneous rhythms and inner poetry of nature directly onto the canvas. Influenced by masters such as J.M.W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, and Claude Monet, he continues to develop a distinctive visual language rooted
in observation and introspection.
A recipient of numerous prestigious national and international awards and honours, Subrata Chatterjee has also worked as an art educator and professional illustrator for publishing
houses. Currently a full-time artist and researcher, he is devoted to studying human psychological responses to art at a subconscious level, using en-plein air practice as a bridge between inner experience and the external world.
His artistic journey has been profoundly inspired and nurtured by his parents, Mita and Prankrishna, whose guidance shaped his early sensitivity toward art. The blessings and encouragement of his grandmother, Padmarani, continue to remain a
quiet source of strength. He also acknowledges the lasting influence of his mentors and teachers—Kalikinkar Chakravarty, Dr. Indrani Sengupta, and Anupam Halder—who played a vital role in shaping his artistic vision and discipline.

The act of yielding, embressing a situation as it is,
relates to emotional processing. Incense sticks are put off and the forward
leaning of the figure approches toward the calm and quiet state of relief,
giving up the need of manage, control or mundane thirst, arising from
exhaustion, fear and desire for peace.

Serpent represents the unity of all things, cosmos, infinity
and the continuous cycle of creation and destruction. It symbolizes eternity and transmutation of
the soul, associated with the 'coiled serpent power', Kundaliny. It mysteriousy
carries the fragrance of death, an occult puzzle, an eternal quest.

In Indian spirituality and philosophy mother holds the
highest position of love, honour and
sacrifice. Her journey is to enrich her society and broader spectrum she
accepts endless hardship with patience and smile. But her third eye is always awakened to watch
every good and evil, and ultimately brings 'amrita' for this mortal world. Her
eyes, 'Padmendu', radiate a light to enlighten us, divinely.

Symbolism of 'Tie' signifies individuality. It is linked with an alter ego. Two snakes,
intertwined with each other, represents a powerful symbol of duality and the
integration of the opposites. Here two snakes signifies the union of life and
death. A small white circle at the centre gives a sense of awakening. While,
in the background, a big dark circle
gives a shadow of decay.

The red moon symbolizes a highly charged, auspicious and
intense time for sadhana, symbolizing
transformation and dissolution of ego. A sadhaka, covered with sacred ash,
gives an occult sense of nothingness. On an old stony staircase, flickering
holy fire is seen as a physical manifestation of creative, dangerous and
transformative power. This painting conveys an occult
message of aghora's to
dissolve karmic blocks and accelerate spiritual growth.

The formless absolute, Lingam, represents Shiva as the
transcendent, formless aspect of the ultimate reality beyond attributes. The lingam is the reminder of the divine spark within every mortal being and the eternal journey of the soul towards self realization. It is a core, focal point for deep
meditation, helping the sadhaka achieve one-pointedness
and realise the divine
within, moving from the material form to the formless. Jivatma approaches to the final awakening through the union of soul and body, consciousness and energy.

Pious is sprouted from the deep core state of my
understanding about religion. It is a churning of life of action, culture and
realization about human relation and concordance.
Symbolism is an important
part in this process.
Through this occult bridge a practitioner can reach his
meditative world. It is a world of luminary and
as well as a deep, dark, calm
shrine. Human life, like a pitcher, embraces its
collective piousness and puts
into the womb of time. It leaves many marks of struggle
and serenity on the
surface of human cycle. Here, I tried to apply
strong chiaroscuro to elevate
the composition to an enchanted plane. Umber,
greenish-yellow, reddish-black
with tiny textures knitted a feeling of smoky wave.
A path without line leads
to unknown, crosses mere decaying anatomy
and melts the plain of unspoken
scripture where soul dissolves into depthless cogitation.
Background wall seems
like time stricken pages of history. It bears countless wound.
It bears countless wounds of civilisation. It is a dark,
sombre state of human history, a fossil garland of pageless story.
A dark smoky
circle carries the mind to hollow of uncanny chamber. A broken, ghostly,
fragmented smoke crawls into the deep hollow way, loosing its superficiality

Reading is a 'life long spring'. Reading ancient texts hold
significant value because these works have stood the test of time and a deeper
understanding of the human condition. Ancient literature addresses fundamental
questions about love, loss, courage and morality that are as just relevant
today as they are in the past. It places the reader in the middle of a
continuous centuries-long conversation about the human condition, a long chain
of human experience. Tiny, fragile lines
on the very old wooden panels, dust covered books and on the forehead of the
portrait bear age long marks of the bygone era. A muted, golden light covers
the whole scenario and it tells the presence of the value, a deep insight, a
strong indication to gain a profound understanding of the present

I always take challenge to capture the inertia of human life
and its deep feelings. And, I, truly,
try to understand deep rooted bonding of human interactions through
visual impressions. This painting is a silent visual record about 'Two
Hermits'. I spent a lot of time with
them and observed their personal life. When they discussed a topic on
spirituality or about deep tantra, usually, they closed themselves, within. And, what I noticed, very much, was
mysterious, deep and occult. Continuous
journey is my alter ego and roaming in the world of occult is an another from
of core attraction. I applied dark, meditative colours which are most
appropriate tool to catch the calm mood of the principle figures.

An enchanted state refers to a magical world. It leads the
mind to deep symbolic forces. An enchanted world likes
to view nature as sacred
rather than just raw, but covered with mystery. The magical vapor swirls and
rises upward. A luminous sphere dances atop that vapor And, this environment
has given birth to a surreal reality. The crown, glittering with golden light
above the magician's head, has bestowed upon him a regal magesty. The magicwand, leaning against his shoulder, tell stories of his journeys through many
unknown and occult worlds. The magician's eyes are captivated by a profound mystery and a vast sphere of enchanted energy is awakening in the background of the image.

Mysterious grey smoke represents a state of ambiguity and
transition. It acts as a bridge between the purity of white and the volatility
of black. It also suggests an uncanny reappearance from the forgotten past as a
shadow of erasing memory.
Half ghostly image at the back of the central figure
gives a sense of grey apparition from
the oblivion cavern of the spirit world.
A small window may be an unidentified
gateway to get into the same. A big
textured circle with triangle, knotted with a lase,
suggests uncanniness of a
maze. And, within the core of it, swirling, serpent like smoke appears.
An Ozz
portrait is seen like a spilikin master. In this composition I tried to portray
a complicated puzzle-game.

In general, mossy wall represents very old age and
symbolizes the gentle reclamation of man-made
structure by nature, telling the
deep significance of endurance, patience and
the profound passage of time.
Mossy wall witnesses slow time and thrives in low light with soil, portrays
quiet resistance, surviving through ages.
It recalls forgotten paths, acting as
living, breathing map of history. Also, it symbolizes harmony and tranquil
existence. The mossy wall indicates that
it is not just dead surface but a thriving
eco system, turning ruination into a
new, natural begining. The broken, old
pieces of wood in the background of the
painting evoke ancient memories.
The small yet deep lines on the forehead
narrate the essence of a long life's journey. The pristine white sari reflects
the purity of the person's heart. The use of moss-green and white in the
painting conveys a pleasant, nostalgic atmosphere.
